Companies that make up the regiment are traditionally numbered. New officers destined for the regiment that are at Sandhurst or at ATC Pirbright form No. 13 Coy, while Guardsmen under training at ITC Catterick make up No. 14 Coy. [12] No. 7 Coy is one of the incremental companies formed to undertake public duties in London and Windsor, and maintains the colours and traditions of the former 2nd Battalion. Operationally, The Coldstream Guards currently perform the role of light infantry . The 1st Battalion is based in Windsor at Victoria Barracks as an operational light infantry battalion. [13]

Just prior to World War II , ponchos were significantly improved during testing with the . Army Jungle Experimental Platoon in the jungles of Panama , incorporating new, lighter materials and a drawcord hood that could be closed off to form a rain fly or ground sheet. [7] Ponchos were widely used by United States armed forces during World War II; even lightly equipped foot-mounted forces such as Merrill's Marauders , forced to discard tentage and all other unnecessary equipment, retained their blanket and poncho. [10] During the 1950s, new lightweight coated nylon and other synthetic materials were developed for military ponchos. The poncho has remained in service ever since as a standard piece of . military field equipment. [7] Today, the United States armed forces issue ponchos that may be used as a field expedient shelter. These garments are also used by hunters , campers , and rescue workers.

The RAF had stood up to the Luftwaffe and won. The threat of a German invasion was over. Soon, as Churchill predicted, the “tide of the world war” would shift toward the forces of freedom. During the next five years, Churchill and the British leadership were able to expand the size of the British army, add new planes to the resources of the RAF, repair and replace the ships lost at Dunkirk and reestablish the British Navy as one of the most powerful in the world. Newly fortified, British soldiers fought against advances in North Africa and the Middle East by the Axis forces.
