I also have a high stress career and find it difficult to sleep. Diet wise- eliminate processed sugar from your diet and all sodas (especially diet sodas). Eliminate caffeine. If you must have coffee, stick to one cup in the morning, but no coffee after 12pm. If you find you need pick-me-ups throughout the day, keep cold lemon water on you and try to drink at least 80 ounces a day. It’s amazing how staying hydrated clears the mind! Make a goal to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if it’s just a brisk walk. Next, begin to work on your body’s natural melatonin production. Very important- go to bed at the same time every night. At least one hour before bed, avoid “screen time”: tv, browsing the Internet, computer work, phone scrolling, etc. Lower the lights in your house and make a conscious effort to create at atmosphere of relaxation, even if you don’t feel tired. Practice meditation at this time. Start with 5 minutes a night and focus on your breath. Visualize your thoughts and worries simply floating by. You can experiment with herbal teas before bed: valerian, chamomile, “sleepy time”, etc. keep your bedroom cool- 63 F or lower, crack a window if possible. Use a white noise app while you sleep. Keep the same ritual every night. You need to train your mind to quiet down and having a routine will help. If you still have difficulty getting to sleep, try a Melatonin supplement 30 min before bed. I find the sublingual tablets in a low dose work best for me. I also really like a product called Natural Calm. It’s just powdered magnesium you mix with warm water. It helps calm your nerves and promotes relaxation. Finally, make time for yoga! Even a weekend class will help you eliminate the build up of stress and get you to start focusing on breathing. I hope this helps- it works for me!
